Encoding string to HTML safe characters

Is there an easy way to encode in javascript a string to another string
that would have HTML safe characters like & to $amp; and such?

^
function htmlEncode(s)
{
return s.replace(/&(?!\w+([;\s]|$))/g, "&")
.replace(/</g, "<").replace(/>/g, ">");
}

Everything else is "HTML safe" already. You just need to declare the
proper encoding properly.
